I am just finishing my year at an AmeriCorps State organization. I have experienced many disheartening situations as far as money, benefits and worker protection through out my year. It is truly a shame that workers that make such a difference don't even have the luxury of basic employee protection from the U.S. Department of Labor like minimum wage or COBRA. As a result of legislation we are not considered employees, therefore, we are not afforded this basic protection. Our services offered are considered voluntary and our salary is called a "living allowance." The smallest and biggest step that needs to be taken for AmeriCorps jobs is to change this.
